I’m moving. There, I said it. Yep, moving back to the state where I was born, raised, schooled, and birthed my babies. At 42, I left Pennsylvania kicking and screaming that the only good things about New Jersey were Avalon and that whole “get your gas tank filled without getting out of your car” thing. But my husband-to-be lived there… so I moved… with two little boys and a whole moving van full of memories and mixed feelings.
Today, 12 years later, I’m an adopted Jersey Girl. I married my beloved husband and raised my awesome boys here, started my decorating career, made life-long friends, passed my NJ driver’s test on the second try, and learned there’s a lot more to New Jersey than the shore and low gas prices.
Moving is an emotional experience for almost everyone. You have second thoughts. You shed some tears. You find old photos of your younger self, (thankfully there’s TBT) wedding gifts you never used, books you never read, clothes you once loved, clothes you wore once, trophies & ribbons won by and school projects & artwork drawn by your children when they were young and innocent. And you won’t know what to do with any of it.
Moving 8 times in my adult life doesn’t make me a Moving Expert. Adding to those 8 moves, another combined 8 moves of my 3 siblings, and another 4 or 5 friends who I helped pack up, (now we’re talking 20 moves) doesn’t even qualify me as an “expert,” but seriously, who cares about credentials these days? (Bethany Frankel? Kim Kardashian?) I don’t have a PR agent, but I can tell you that if you wait until the week before your move to start packing, it won’t be pretty… your back will hurt… and you’ll be cranky.
So enjoy my upcoming tips and tricks that I will use myself while I get ready to move across the river, I’ll share some packing tips, organization suggestions, re-location humor, all the while reminding myself, “It’s Only a Move.”
